local food inspiration
Last weekend I was delighted to find green things reappearing at my local farmer's market. After a winter that featured primarily eggs, baked goods, meats, honey, soaps, preserves, and a few root vegetables and apples left over from the Fall, it's exciting to see fresh produce again. Last weekend I picked up some tender baby bok choy and a gorgeous mesclun that included brightly colored edible flowers in the mix. I can't wait to see what I find there tomorrow!

Meanwhile, I'm eagerly awaiting the return of our regular farmer's market. (The one that's been running all winter has been a very scaled-down version in a different location down the road.) My excitement has me flipping through local food cookbooks such as Deborah Madison's gorgeous Local Flavors
and heading to the archives of Gourmet's Diary of a Foodie to watch episodes that feature local produce. Here are some screen shots from one episode that's specifically all about local foods. As a vegetarian, I'm less interested in some elements of this episode than in others (I'll skip the venison, thank you), but there's something here to please everyone. I'm particularly eager to try the recipe for pasta with beet greens when fresh beets start showing up at the market.
