a complicated renovation

Just got home from seeing It's Complicated -- a fun film starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin, among others. A recent Newsweek article entitled House Beautiful: The Movie described the movie's sets as "design porn," so I was prepared to enjoy not only the story but also the visuals. And indeed, the home belonging to Streep's character was lovely. So much so, that I was baffled by a major plot point in which she decides to hire an architect to design an addition for her house, encompassing a new kitchen, home office, and bedroom.
