a classy transformation for a supermarket african violet

The brilliant Sally Schneider over at The Improvised Life (one of my very favorite blogs) recently wrote about her simple approach to transforming those cheap potted plants you get at the supermarket. You know the ones -- planted in flimsy plastic pots and wrapped in that shiny plastic "paper" in any of a variety of weirdly glowing colors.

Her trick is a simple one: Just take the plant out of its paper & pot, and put it into a lovely pottery bowl. The dirt and roots will be exposed, but there's a charm to that, making it seem a bit like being outside in your garden.

The simplicity and visual appeal of this little trick inspired me to try my own version with an African Violet from my local grocery store. I didn't think to snap a "before" picture, but trust me -- it was ugly.

  1. That's so lovely! What will happen when you water it?

  2. I've watered it several times already, and so far so good. I water gently on top, until it starts pooling in the bottom of the bowl. Then I wait a few seconds while the plant soaks as much in as it's going to, then I carefully pour the excess out of the bottom of the bowl. I imagine eventually the root ball might start crumbling and losing its shape. But my cats will probably eat it long before that happens! :)

  3. Very interesting. I hope it lasts for some time! Thanks for visiting my blog; I have fun with it, but haven't ever really targeted it for an audience. I'd be honored if you featured it. :) Miss you!
